Human Rights in China reports that Guan Heng, a Chinese citizen who covertly filmed Uyghur detention facilities in Xinjiang in 2020 and later smuggled the footage out of the country, was arrested by ICE in upstate New York in August 2025 during a raid targeting his roommate. Guan had entered the United States in 2021 after a journey through South America and a solo boat crossing from the Bahamas, and his footage was subsequently used as evidence by international journalists. He now faces deportation to China, where advocates warn he would be in grave danger, with a court date scheduled in New York.
