Inside Medicine, a publication by emergency physician Jeremy Faust, MD, reports that Dr. Rubeliz Bolivar, a Venezuelan emergency medicine resident at South Texas Health System in McAllen, Texas, was detained by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security while traveling with her five-year-old U.S. citizen daughter to a scheduled asylum interview. Dr. Bolivar holds a valid work permit and had been living in the United States for approximately a decade. The American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association issued a joint statement calling for her release, noting she was an ACEP member and that her detention marked the second physician detained in the Rio Grande Valley within less than a week.
